Skin Hunger and Sacred Scarsby Kathleen Duey
For all of you magic lovers, I have found the perfect trilogy for you! Kathleen Duey has written two fantastic books so far, but a third one is in the works to complete the Resurrection of Magic Series. The second book,Sacred Scars, has just been released, but I do not feel like I could talk about it without mentioning the first book, Skin Hunger. This series is the equivalent to a dark and scary Harry Potter book. The story centers around a wizard school, but not a pleasant one. Students must learn magic to make their food and eat, memorize chants to live, and sell out their fellow students to win. Simultaneously, a story is taking place about the creation of this horrid wizard school, and by the end of the second book the stories are starting to connect and line up together. These are terrific books that I would recommend to all teens. They are here at the Mesa County Library, so check them out!
Alyzon Whitestarrby Isobelle Carmody
Weird, but good, best describes this book. I actually appreciate a weird book now and again because they are usually pretty original. This case was no different. The story is about Alyzon Whitestarr, obviously, and her heightened senses. A severe head injury accompanied by a month long coma gives Alyzon the ability to smell emotion and influence people's thoughts. With these enhanced senses she finds that everyone is not what they seem. For instance, the cutest boy at school smells like rotten garbage! Despite the bombardment of senses, Alyzon is able to utilize her gifts and save her family and friends from unwanted attention from nefarious (a.k.a. shady) characters. This book is a fun read, but it will also make you more aware your own senses, like how am I smelling today?!? If you are interested in this book, it is on our new teen book shelf.
Happy Reading!
