New Book Reviews for Teens Top Ten!

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks
by E. Lockhart

What is with books about boarding schools and rich kids, especially when when most kids are middle class and go to public schools? Someone must be reading and enjoying these books because this book is a nominee for Teens Top Ten. The thing I enjoy most about this book was the main character, Frankie. Although she lives in a world that revolves around tradition, mainly in regards to gender, she breaks all of the conventions. Things do not go the way Frankie plans, but she stays true to herself, which was the most important thing. Despite the story having some sort of moral, it was very entertaining to read. This book may be for younger teens because the main character is only 15 and sometimes the storyline is slightly immature. However, I enjoyed it and I am an adult - well most of the time! Check it out and remember to vote on your favorites!

City of Ashes

by Cassandra Clare

I am hooked! This series is great. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre. The series starts with the book, City of Bones. Instead of giving too much away, I will just briefly tell you about the series as a whole. It begins with the main character, Clary, witnessing a crime in a club, but she is the only one who could see it. Come to find out, there is a whole dark world co-existing with the human one. She is linked to this world by being a descendant to a long line of demon hunters, a.k.a. Shadow Hunters. Things take off fast when Clary finds her mother in a coma and must explore this new dark world for answers. This story has romance, action, suspense, and magic. It is a read that both guys and gals will enjoy alike, so look for it on the library shelves, but remember to read the series in order!

Absolutely Maybe
by Lisa Ye
e

Absolutely read this book! This book is so quirky and fun, although it does deal with some deep teen issues. The story is about Maybe, yes it is a girl's name. Her mother names her after her favorite mascara brand, Maybelline. Needless to say, Maybe and her mother do not have the best relationship. After a fight involving her mother's newest boyfriend, Maybe decides that it would be easier to find and live with her real father, which she has never met. Maybe and her BFF, Ted, set out on a road trip to California to search for her father. While in California, Maybe has a transformation and finding herself instead, and makes lots of interesting friends along the way. This book is touching, but like I said...quirky. You should not "maybe" check this book out, but "absolutely" check it out on the library book shelves.

Remember to vote August 25th through September 18th at www.ala.org/teentopten!

Teen Movie Night... SPACEBALLS!

It promises to be a entertaining evening Monday, July 13th at 5:30pm. Spaceballs (PG) is a classic comedy from the lates 1980's that stars Mel Brooks (very funny), John Candy, Bill Pullman, and Rick Moranis (from Honey I Shrunk the Kids). This movie reminds me of the recent popular films Not Another Teen Movie and Scary Movie because they spoof other well known features (obviously this movie makes fun of famous sci-fi movies). Come join us for the movie in the Teen Center!

Coming Soon: National Treasure 2 on Thursday, July 30th. In August, we will be showing 17 Again.

WE NOW HAVE ROCK BAND 2!!!!!

Teens:
Join us on Mondays 2:30-4:30 at the Central Library's downstairs programming room. This coming Monday you will be able to play the libraries new Rock Band 2 game on the Wii. We have 2 guitars, the drums, and a microphone, so as many as four can be playing at one time! Hope to see you there:)

New Book Reviews...

For Fantasy Enthusiasts:

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

This book was recommended by a few Grand Junction teens, so I checked it out. Boy was I glad! This book is an awesome read. The story is set in a medieval kingdom and reads like a dark fairy tale. In this kingdom some people are born with graces, which are special talents. The main character, Katsa, is graced with the ability to kill. Needless to say, with this special grace she is used and manipulated as a killing tool by a not-so-nice king. While she plays the role of the "good soldier," secretly Katsa is forming a group of citizens to battle the injustices of the kingdom. This book has it all; ther is action, suspense, romance, magic, and fantasy. I haven't heard a bad review yet, so check it out!

For Science Fiction Lovers:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Where have you been? This book is super popular for a good reason... because it is crazy cool! The story takes place in a futuristic world. In this world, games are held yearly at the capital and all districts are expected to send players as tributes. Each district is required by law to send one teen boy and girl to the games to compute to the death. It is very reminiscent of old Roman gladiator games. Anyway, the book focuses on one district's teens in particular, Katniss and Peeta, of District 12. While the teens should be competing against each other, friendship and alliances are made that will change the outcome of the games. To find out more, you'll just have to read it!
*Also watch for the sequel Catching Fire that comes out in September 2009.

For all the "Girly-Girls" out there:

The Season By Sarah Maclean

Last week I read The Season by Sarah Maclean. It is a historic drama/romance set in the early 1800s that tells the story of a teen girl named Alexandra, or Alex, by her friends and family. As you probably imgagine the storyline revolves around Alex's first season coming out into society. While Alex enjoys some parts of the season- the balls and parties- she is not quite ready to be married off. This story follows Alex and her two best friends as they navigate the London social scene, encountering some mystery, but mostly romance, the one thing that they were trying to avoid. If you like Jane Austen and historic fiction, you will enjoy The Season. Sorry guys, this may not be a read for you!
